Gallaudet University's Art Department proudly presented its 6th annual juried show, entitled "Deaf Student Film Showcase '07." The April 30 screenings in the Jordan Student Academic Center offered a venue for creative, deaf student filmmakers to share various short films, including American Sign Language (ASL) storytelling, ASL jokes, ASL dramas, and ASL documentaries with the deaf community and hearing viewers alike.

Most films are portrayed in ASL, but some shorts have subtitles; otherwise, transcripts are available upon request. Trailers from the films are available online. (Click an image to view the trailer) Judges Jane Norman, Ph.D., Angela Farrand, M.F.A., guest speakers Gary Brooks, and Michael Nesmith appeared during the film showcase. Awards were presented at the end of the event.

Students winning awards are:

2nd Place: [tie] Traveling in Puerto Rico, Patricia De Beer; The Land of Enchantment, Ursa Rewolinski

There was a moment of silence for those that killed and wounded at Virginia Tech, and for those in the University community who recently passed away--Paul Setzer, a professor in the Department of Art, Gil Eastman, a professor in the Department of Theatre Arts, and Facundo Montenegro, a professor in the Department of Television, Photography, and Digital Media.

Please accept my appreciation for your contributions to the Deaf Student Film Showcase ‘07. Many special thanks to the Art Department, Academic Technology, and TV and Media Production Services.
